Implementation of the Institutio Generalis of the Roman Missal (GIRM, 2002)
1. FOR PRIEST/DEACON
Posture of the People at the “Pray, Brethren...” -- The
people should stand from the invitation, “Pray, brethren.."
Rationale: The people stand for all of the presider’s prayers
Change: The celebrant or deacon should invite the people to stand at the
appropriate time.
2. FOR MUSICIANS/CANTORS/PRIESTS AND DEACONS
Responsorial psalm -- “Only psalm texts approved by the
Bishops Conference may be used for the Psalm Refrain. Songs or hymns may not be
used in place of the Responsorial.
Rationale: This adaptation allows for the use of psalms arranged in metric form.
This is a widening of the 1975 GIRM.
Change: Musicians should choose only those psalm refrain settings from
approved collections.
Change: Cantors will lead Psalm Refrain from the Pulpit, not the cantor’s
music stand. Lector should remove the lectionary from the pulpit after the first
reading to make room for the cantor’s music.
3. FOR LECTORS/PRIESTS/DEACONS
Book of the Gospels -- ‘The Book of the Gospels if carried
in the Procession at the beginning of Mass. The Lectionary is never carried in
the procession.”
Change: Before Mass, the lector places the Lectionary on the pulpit for
the readings. The Book of the Gospels is carried by the deacon or the lector in
the procession at the beginning of the Mass. After the usual reverence to the
altar upon reaching sanctuary, the deacon or the lector places the Book of the
Gospels on the right hand corner of the altar. The Book of the Gospels is
carried to the pulpit in procession by the deacon or the priest. After the
proclamation of the Gospel, the Book of the Gospels is placed on the shelf on
the back sanctuary wall. It is never carried in the recessional.
4. FOR PRIESTS
Sign of Peace -- “The priest
generally should not leave the sanctuary during the sign of peace.”
Change: “The priest gives the sign of peace to the ministers, but always
remains in the ....... On special occasions (weddings, funerals, when civic
leaders are present), he may offer the sign of peace to a few of the faithful
near the sanctuary. Rationale: It is important that the length of the
celebration not be unduly extended by the sign of peace. Also, the faithful
should not wait to receive the sign of peace from the celebrant as in the
previous instruction but immediately extend it to those nearby.
5. FOR THE PEOPLE
Reception of Communion -- “The norm
for the reception of Communion in the United States is standing. Before
receiving Communion the communicant bows his or her head as a gesture of
reverence. When the communicant is receiving from the cup, the same bow of
reverence is made.”
6. FOR EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS/SERVERS
Postures while in the sanctuary --
The correct posture for those in the sanctuary at the “Lamb of God” is standing.
Also, once Mass has begun, no one in the sanctuary should bow or genuflect as
they pass in front of the tabernacle EXCEPT the person who removes the Blessed
Sacrament from the tabernacle to place it on the altar and replace it in the
tabernacle. This person genuflects immediately alter opening the tabernacle door
to remove the Eucharist and immediately before closing the tabernacle door after
replacing the Eucharist.
7. FOR PRIESTS AND PEOPLE
Periods of Silent Prayer -- “A short
time of silence is provided for all the pray quietly after the first reading and
after the distribution of communion.”
8. FOR CELEBRANTS AND DEACONS
Purification of vessels -- After the
distribution of communion, the deacon combines the Eucharist in the ciboria to
prepare them to be replaced in the tabernacle. At Masses with no deacon, the
celebrant doe this, but gives the ciboria to the Captain of the Eucharistic
Ministers for that Mass to replace in the tabernacle. The celebrant purifies the
vessels either at the altar or at the side table. All vessels are then placed on
the credence table with the help of the altar servers.
